Maddie Steele, Forest Lake MN
October 2023 Intern
Veterinary Technician Student from NDSU
I spent 9 weeks at Lisbon veterinary clinic as a veterinary technician extern. From day one everyone was so welcoming and
nice to me. You definitely get that small town family with them. I saw and did so many wonderful things during my time. My confidence and knowledge grew so
much in small animal and large animal medicine. I made so many great memories in my time and I thank each and everyone of the staff for teaching me something
new everyday.
Cambree Ferguson, Surrey ND
July 2023 Intern
Veterinary Technician Student from NDSU
I completed a 6 week externship at Lisbon Veterinary Service where I had a very hands-on and exciting experience working
alongside their amazing staff. I enjoyed the challenge of applying my knowledge and technical skills with no shortage of interesting cases, one of my favorites
being a canine emergency c-section where we delivered 9 healthy puppies! My education at NDSU along with my experiences at Lisbon Vet have confidently prepared
me for my vet tech career. I would recommend Lisbon Veterinary Service for anyone with a passion for top notch mixed animal care!
Nicole Sterzinger, Taunton MN
August 2023 Externship
4th year Veterinary Student from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine
During my time at Lisbon, I received nothing short of an wonderful experience! Veterinarians, technicians and support staff
alike helped to create a safe learning environment and were all extremely helpful. The veterinarians here strive to teach valuable lifelong skills, providing
you with as much experience as possible in a true mixed animal practice. During my time, I got to focus on improving my ultrasound skills with dairy and beef
herds. However, that did not stop me from gaining experiences in other aspects of veterinary medicine from breeding soundness examination on rams to equine
dentals and extractions to companion animal dentals, surgeries and consultations. They do it all! Undoubtedly, anyone will receive lots of hands-on experience
with the level of help needed. Thank you so much for having me!
Ashley Folsom, Fargo ND
June 2023 Intern
Veterinary Technician Student from NDSU
Over the summer I spent 6 weeks at Lisbon Veterinary Service as a Veterinary Technician extern. This clinic doesn’t let
being in a small town hold them back from offering quality veterinary care. The staff pushed me to be my very best and better every day. I solidified my
small animal skills and greatly improved my knowledge and confidence working with large animals. I was able to get hands-on experience and have the opportunity
to try new things every day. The clinic and staff have a family forward mentality and greet you with open arms. I made so many friends and even more memories
during those 6 weeks.
Ellen-Dauphinais, Parkers Prairie MN
August 2022 Externship
4th year Veterinary Student from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine
I had the opportunity to spend two weeks at Lisbon Veterinary Service for an externship this fall. The veterinarians
and staff made me feel at home from day one. I was able to choose which cases I wanted to be a part of and help with all aspects of the diagnosis, plan,
and treatment. I had the opportunity to improve technical skills including small animal surgery, IV catheter placement, and bovine rectal palpation.
The externship was a great mix of hands on learning as well as critical thinking that tied information back to the lectures I have had at school.
In addition to all the great veterinary medicine experiences I was able to see what work life balance truly is and had tons of delicious food prepared for me in the
evenings by the Sands. If you are looking for a truly mixed animal experience I would highly recommend Lisbon Veterinary Service.
Shyla Neugebauer, Bismarck ND
August 2022 shadowing
Pre Veterinary Student from North Dakota State University
When applying for veterinary school, I realized all of my experience was with small animals so I searched for a large animal clinic that would welcome and teach me. I had a great experience while feeling extremely safe and included. I even got to give some shots!
Mikayla Lacher, Christine ND
July 2022 externship
First year veterinary student from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine
I spent a very fun-filled week at Lisbon Veterinary Service this summer. I was able to stay with Dr. Sand and her family who are very good hosts and cooks. My goal was to learn different techniques and methods for similar cases or procedures which was easily accomplished with their great staff and veterinarians. My favorite experiences include: drawing blood, placing a catheter, palpating bulls and cows, placing sutures, castrating calves, examining puppies, and repairing a bovine vaginal prolapse. I would highly recommend Lisbon Veterinary Service to students looking to learn hands-on skills while being surrounded by supportive staff!
Allison Wieler, Walhalla ND
June 2022 externship
Second year veterinary student from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine
During my week here, I feel like I got the true experience of what it is like to be a rural area mixed animal veterinarian. All of the vets here are inclusive in their cases and allowed me tons of hands-on experience. Ultrasounding dairy cattle, goat & horse blood draws, and several small animal surgeries are just a few highlights of my week. I highly recommend an internship at Lisbon Veterinary Service.
Melissa Hill, Conneticut

My time at Lisbon Vet was nothing short of amazing! The doctors and support staff were kind and patient, allowing me to get invaluable hands on experience. They challenged me to apply the things I learned in the classroom, while keeping me excited to pursue my future career as a veterinarian. I highly recommend spending some time with the team in Lisbon for a well-rounded experience!
HP O'Doherty, Pocatello ID

Fourth year veterinary student from Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine
My externship at Lisbon Vet Service was great! It was a wonderful opportunity to practice skills that I had only heard about in class. Everyone, including clients, were very patient with me as I learned. If you are looking for a clinic that does a little bit of everything and will let you get hands-on practice, I recommend Lisbon.
Abigail Waloch, Wilton ND
December 2021 externship
Fourth year veterinary student from Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine
I am very happy to have gotten an opportunity for my externship in Lisbon! The mentorship and knowledge I gained was more than I ever could have asked for. It didn't matter which vet you ended up with, they were going to include you, let you get hands on, and quiz you! I really appreciated the welcoming staff and atmosphere and would definitely go back!
Luisa Dalton, Germany
October 2021 externship
Veterinarian from Germany applying for US accreditation
I came to Lisbon Vet Service as a veterinary graduate from Germany working towards my US veterinary license. I was seeking more cattle experience and that's exactly what I got! I really enjoyed the larger herds and having my ''own'' ultrasound while preg checking. The new facilities are a dream to work in and the clinic team is a lot of fun to work with. During my time here I also got to do some small animal surgeries, worked on horses and really got my cattle vaccines down pat thanks to Dr. Smykowski.
Besides the veterinary experience I enjoyed Dr. Sand's hospitality and long hikes in the nearby State Forrest and Grasslands.
Codi Schaper, Grassy Butte ND

I can't even begin to tell you how much experience I gained while externing at the clinic! I saw a variety of
cattle cases and was able to expand on my palpation knowledge and feel confident in my ability to palpate.
Dr. Sand was beyond hospitable with housing me and making me multiple meals while there. I am grateful for my
experience at the clinic!
Taylor Storhoff, Nome ND

I was with the Lisbon Veteinary Clinic for 3 weeks and had a great time. I was able to be a part of all aspects of the veterinary practice and profession. I was able to interact
with clients seeing small animal appointments, improve my skills in small animal surgery, and assist with large animal cases. I would highly recommend Lisbon Veterinary Clinic to anyone looking for a true mixed animal experience where the staff
is supportive and will allow you to be involved in cases.

I had an amazing experience at Lisbon Veterinary Service. I am extremely grateful for the mentorship and experience I gained. I appreciate their jump right in approach that allowed me to perform
procedures by the first day. Not only did this give me real life experience, but also increased my confidence. Some highlights include: repairing two bovine vaginal prolapses, performing dentals including
extractions, spaying and neutering cats and dogs, rectally palpating countless bovine, as well as performing the typical general mixed animal practice procedures. I would like to give a special shout out to
Dr. Andrea Sand and her husband Mike for their hospitality (I stayed at their house and they fed me every meal), being my tour guides, and taking me to community events. This experience confirms that my
future will be in a clinic and community much like Lisbon Veterinary Service.
Allison Wieler, Walhalla ND
Summer 2019 intern
I had an amazing time this summer with the Lisbon Veterinary Service Team. I enjoyed getting to know the employees and meeting new clients. As a student applying to vet school, I greatly value my experiences which helped solidify my decision to be in the mixed animal setting after vet school. A couple favorite parts of my internship were the large animal surgeries and going to Qual Dairy to palpate and ultrasound cows.
